Back-to-School Health: Prioritizing Wellness in a Busy World
8/31/20262 min read

Heading back to a school-year routine brings back that all-too-familiar, daunting question: “What’s for dinner?”
And if you’re like many parents, the meal planning doesn’t stop there. You’re also figuring out what to pack for lunch and making sure everyone eats a healthy breakfast before rushing out the door.
Coordinating all these meals—trying to keep them healthy, accommodating everyone’s preferences, and staying conscious of a budget—is exhausting. And then, week after week, the cycle repeats.
Reframing the Daily Grind
We can view this as a never-ending struggle, or we can simply see it as life. This is real. This takes up a massive portion of our day, existing alongside our jobs, after-school activities, and the baseline goal of keeping everyone alive and well.
As parents, we hold many jobs—both paid and unpaid. The sheer volume of responsibilities adds stress to our lives, making it essential to manage our emotional and mental well-being so we can stay fully present for our kids. Many of us are doing this without the support of nearby family, which only adds to the load.
It is exhausting. Let’s not pretend otherwise. We all need to pause, look at what we accomplish in a single day, and give ourselves credit for everything we manage to carry.
Giving Yourself Grace
Between navigating ongoing health concerns, environmental stressors, and the rising cost of living, we are all managing a lot. Take a moment to pause and recognize that you are doing your best to show up for your family.
At this stage, health—both physical and mental—must be a priority. If you haven't put yourself on the priority list yet, take some time to reflect on what you truly want.
Redefining What Health Means
Health is so much more than a number on a scale. If weight management has been your primary focus, it’s worth digging deeper into what’s driving that goal. True well-being requires focusing on overall health and long-term vitality.
It’s also important to remember that fitness and health aren't the exact same thing—though staying active certainly supports good health. Real health encompasses:
Our overall quality of life
How we spend meaningful time with our families
How we communicate and treat one another
Health Is Wealth
"Health is wealth" used to feel like a phrase reserved for the privileged. Over time, however, its true meaning becomes clear: health is real wealth. It’s inner wealth, long-term wealth, and the kind of investment that keeps on giving.
Building a healthier life is a practice. Like any practice, it takes time, evaluation, reflection, and conscious decision-making. There is no such thing as perfection. There is only doing our best, stumbling, picking ourselves back up, and trying again.
As parents, we are role models. Our children learn from us, adopting our attitudes and beliefs. We have a powerful opportunity to show them that health matters and is worth prioritizing.
Moving Forward with Intention
Are you ready to go through another school year feeling the same way you did last year, or is there something you want to change?
Take a moment to reflect on what you want for yourself and your family. Intentions are powerful. Starting this school year with clear intention can make all the difference in how you navigate whatever comes your way.
This was a recent breakfast of cheese toast with fresh local fruit.
I grew up on this cheese toast as a child, but it was with a can of blue Kraft cheese (highly processed I assume-in a can!). Toppings were always onions, green chillies and tomatoes.
